How to build a knowledge base that produces useful AI answers

Answer quality depends primarily on source quality. Learn which sources to use, how they are processed, and why your assistant does not need traditional model training.

A knowledge base is the collection of information the assistant consults for every question. You do not need to program or train your own model; you need accurate, current, and understandable materials.

Which sources can be used

Informio combines multiple content types in one knowledge layer. Each source is split into smaller meaningful sections, so the assistant receives only passages that may contain the answer rather than an entire document.

  • Manually written information and frequently asked questions.
  • PDF, DOCX, TXT, and multiple Markdown files uploaded at once.
  • Automatically synchronized XML, Heureka, or Google Merchant product feeds.

The assistant is not trained from scratch

Content is divided into chunks and converted into embeddings that represent meaning. A customer question is processed in the same way, and the closest supporting passages are retrieved from a vector database. This approach is called RAG.

  • New or updated content becomes available after indexing finishes.
  • There is no need for expensive, slow training of a custom language model.
  • Any source can be edited, disabled, or removed later.

How to write content AI can understand

The best sources are self-contained facts with clear titles and complete meaning. One section should cover one topic. Products benefit from a stable ID, precise name, description, parameters, price, availability, and a direct link.

  • Use specific names instead of vague references such as this product or there.
  • Separate valid information from outdated document versions.
  • Include an effective date and direct source link for important facts.

Measure quality instead of guessing

Test real customer questions after adding sources. Quality Lab highlights answer success, uncertainty, and missing knowledge. For product feeds, Informio also evaluates descriptions, parameters, images, and availability.

  • Create test cases for your most important commercial questions.
  • Track recurring questions that still lack a useful answer.
  • Verify results after every significant source change.

A useful knowledge base grows with customer questions

You do not need to document the entire company on day one. Start with a reliable foundation, test questions, and conversation review. Informio will show which missing information deserves attention next.
