When an AI chat should hand the customer to a human operator
Not every question should be automated. Informio lets a person take over the same conversation, clearly informs the visitor, and can later return the chat to AI.
AI is excellent for repetitive questions and immediate guidance. Complaints, individual offers, and sensitive situations often need a person. A good support experience combines both.
When to offer a human operator
The visitor can request a person directly, or the assistant can suggest a handoff based on its rules. Typical cases include missing confirmed evidence or a decision that only an employee can make.
- The customer explicitly asks to speak with a person.
- The request requires order, complaint, or personal-data verification.
- The assistant lacks evidence and further automated replies would not help.
How conversation takeover works
An online operator receives an administration alert and a prominent ring for a handoff request. After taking over, the operator sees the full conversation and a reply field. The visitor sees the operator's name and knows that a person is now responding.
- The customer does not need to explain the problem from the beginning.
- Operator messages appear immediately in the same website widget.
- While a human is active, AI does not answer or consume tokens.
What if nobody is available
Each organization chooses whether and when to use live handoff. If no operator is online, the assistant can collect contact details, offer an email address, or explain that the team will respond later.
- Operators use an I'm online switch in the administration.
- Alerts can also be delivered by email or Slack integration.
- Waiting requests remain clearly marked in the conversation list.
Ending the chat and returning to automation
After resolving the request, the operator can return the conversation to AI. The customer may end, rate, and restart the chat. Ended conversations are locked to prevent accidental additional messages.
- Conversation state remains clear for both visitors and the team.
- Ratings help measure satisfaction and support quality.
- The full history remains available for review and improvement.
AI does not have to replace people – it can prepare the context
The assistant handles recurring questions while people focus on situations where human judgment matters most. The visitor stays in one conversation without starting again.
